My therapeutic philosophy is integrative, meaning that I combine a range of psychotherapeutic influences in a way that attempts to accommodate the vastly unique experiences we each have of the world. About me Explore my approach, qualifications, and counselling charges My counselling approach My therapeutic philosophy is integrative, meaning that I combine a range of psychotherapeutic influences in a way that attempts to accommodate the vastly unique experiences we each have of the world. The foundations of my approach are rooted in a person-centred and psychodynamic way of working. Person-centred, because it is my belief that deep-rooted, long-lasting change must come from a personally authentic place. And psychodynamic because, when understanding our present, it may sometimes be helpful to look back at past experiences that are held within our subconscious. Due to its focus on the present moment and of working with body awareness, Gestalt is also hugely influential to my understanding of therapy. Gestalt philosophy sees our mind, body and spirit as a whole and asks that we experience and integrate these parts of ourselves in a way that is unique to us as individuals. Neuroscience has a great deal to offer in terms of a more tangible, practical way of working with our self. As we work, we will attempt to understand how our brain and body reacts to our thoughts, which can be an enormously empowering experience in itself. Lastly, our own self-care is an often overlooked aspect of our psychological wellbeing. To support this, I have developed the 5 Pillars of Self-Care which we can lean on, if required, to support us in attending to our sleep, nutrition, exercise, relationships and life purpose. My qualifications Certified Member of BACP (MBACP Reg. No. 374212) CPCAB Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling CPCAB Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling CPCAB Certificate in Counselling Studies CPCAB Certificate in Counselling Skills CPCAB Award in Introduction to Counselling Skills Counselling charges Face-to-face appointments Couples appointments Family relationship therapy £60 £80 £80 All clients are welcome to arrange a free, fifteen minute consultation call to ask any questions and to get a sense of whether I am a good enough fit for you.

It can help you untangle patterns, make sense of your emotions, and see more clearly how past and present experiences may be affecting you. But I also keep another question in mind: what now? Many people reach a point in therapy where they have gained insight, understood more, and begun to make sense of things - but then want to know how to move forward in real life. Alongside reflection and emotional understanding, I focus on helping clients think about direction, change, and practical next steps that feel realistic and meaningful. professional and grounded approach I am an experienced and fully qualified integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor. • Qualified counsellor | Sutton | Sam Archer Counselling

I am a fully qualified professional integrative counsellor, MBACP registered, a short walk from Sutton station. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have about the counselling process. Why counselling? Living life is not only about being able to absorb the ups and downs, it is also about growing from them too. Yet there may be times when we are unable to grow; unable to live in a way that allows us to feel our best and get the most from each moment. At these times it may be useful to speak to a professional counsellor; someone who can know you differently to the way a friend or family member might and who can accept all of who you are, honestly and without judgement. How can counselling help? “Human beings are works in progress that mistakenly think they're finished.” Daniel M. Gilbert A bit about me I am an experienced and fully qualified integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor and registered member of the BACP. Before becoming a psychotheropeutic counsellor, I was lucky enough to have enjoyed a varied professional career from financial services to teaching and much in between. During this time, I have had the privilege of meeting and working with a wide range of people from many cultural, religious and economic backgrounds. I believe it is my life experience, as well as my professional qualifications, that I bring to the counselling relationship. My counselling approach “Change occurs when one becomes what he is, not when he tries to become what he is not.” Arnold Beisser (The paradoxical theory of change) What happens next? When you contact me, we will aim to arrange a first meeting. I will then send you a welcome email to read over before you arrive, giving you some information about the service offered and what to expect. During this initial session we can discuss the issues that have prompted you to seek support and identify what you would like to achieve from counselling. I will also be able to answer any questions or concerns that you may have about the counselling process. This initial session will also give you the opportunity to think about how comfortable you feel with me, which will help you decide whether I’m the most suitable therapist for you. If you decide that you would like to continue, we will then arrange to meet on a regular basis until you feel ready to stop. Therapy sessions are weekly and last for 1 hour. • FAQs | Sam Archer

Frequently asked questions | Common questions • Honest answers Frequently asked questions Common questions • Honest answers FAQs 01 How do I know if I need counselling? Perhaps a more helpful question is, “Could I benefit from counselling?” Many people think counselling is only for times of crisis, but it can also provide support, clarity, and a space to reflect before problems become overwhelming. 02 Do I need to be at rock bottom before starting counselling? No. While some people seek counselling during particularly difficult times, many find it helpful simply to talk through challenges, manage stress, and gain a fresh perspective on their lives. 03 How can counselling help with everyday life? In today’s fast-paced and often stressful world, counselling can help you reconnect with yourself, untangle worries, and feel more grounded and balanced. 04 How long does counselling take? The length of counselling varies from person to person. Some concerns can be addressed in a relatively short period, while more complex or long-term difficulties may require more time. 05 How many sessions will I need? Some people prefer an open-ended approach, while others choose a fixed number of sessions, such as 8–12. Together, we will review progress every 5–6 sessions to ensure your needs are being met. 06 What can I expect from the first session? The first session is a chance to explore what has brought you to counselling, discuss what you hope to gain from therapy, and get a feel for how we might work together. It's also an opportunity to ask questions and decide whether it feels like the right fit. 07 How often would we meet for sessions? Most clients start with weekly sessions, as this gives us time to get to know each other and establish a good rhythm. Over time, some people choose to move to fortnightly, monthly, or occasional sessions, depending on their needs and circumstances. I try to work flexibly and, where possible, fit therapy around the realities and commitments of everyday life. 08 How will I know when to stop counselling? During our initial meeting, we will agree on a starting plan and regularly review your progress. If it feels right for you, we can discuss ending therapy at any point. 09 Is it normal to feel worse before feeling better? Yes. Counselling can sometimes bring up strong or unfamiliar emotions, and there may be times when things feel more difficult before they improve. This can be a normal part of the therapeutic process. 10 Who decides when counselling ends? You are always in control of when you start and finish counselling. My role is to support you in making decisions that feel safe, meaningful, and right for you. 11 Do you offer both in-person and online therapy? Yes. I offer both in-person and online therapy for individuals. Some clients prefer meeting face to face, while others appreciate the flexibility of online sessions, and we can discuss what works best for you. At present, I offer Couples Therapy and Family Relationship Therapy in person only.

  • Couples Therapy - OLD | Sam Archer

Many couples find that therapy not only helps them address current struggles, but also gives them practical tools to maintain a stronger, more fulfilling relationship once therapy has ended. Couples Therapy Couples therapy offers a safe, supportive space for partners to work through challenges together in order to strengthen their relationship in a way that may otherwise be hard, exhausting, or just plain impossible on their own, particularly while also juggling the external stresses and strains of everyday life . In sessions, we look at patterns of communication, explore underlying emotions, and help each partner feel heard and understood. Rather than focusing on who is “right” or “wrong,” therapy is about building healthier ways of relating—whether that means resolving the inevitable conflicts more effectively, reconnecting emotionally, or navigating life changes together. Many couples find that therapy not only helps them address current struggles, but also gives them practical tools to maintain a stronger, more fulfilling relationship once therapy has ended.

  • My Covid-19 Response | Sam Archer

In this time of social isolation, it may be that we are suddenly faced with thoughts, feelings and emotions that we were previously able to avoid, adding to the sense of confusion and uncertainty.  The experience of self-isolating with others can bring up questions about ourselves and our relationships at a time when finding the emotional space to process these thoughts and feelings may be hard. Right now, we are having to deal with an unprecedented reality that, for most of us, is far outside our previous experience or frame of reference. We are having to get used to a new way of being at a time of complete uncertainty which can create feelings of anxiety, low mood and general emotional dysregulation. We are having to absorb information, advice and guidance from many sources and it can be hard to choose the best path for ourselves and those around us. If you would like a safe, confidential space to try and make sense of some of what you are going through, I would like to offer my services. I can provide lower cost remote counselling support or therapy (Zoom, WhatsApp, Skype, telephone) to those who are struggling financially, with the possibility of moving to face-to-face sessions when the virus threat has passed. I can support you in finding and developing your own coping mechanisms that will help you to move through this unsettling time with an increased sense of groundedness and purpose. Often, just being able to find a voice for your own feelings can be an immensely empowering experience. Please contact me by email, phone or text at any time for more information, or if you just have questions or concerns about the counselling process.
